BAKING SODA: A cure in the Spanish Flu, still raved about today. - The Solution

Baking Soda   A prevention and cure during the Spanish Flu

Postings and articles in period newspapers, letters and article in period medical journal indicate the use of baking soda was pervasive.   As a hot gargle, toothpaste, drink, nasal cleanse and IV, and they said it worked.    Those who were thoroughly alkalinized with bicarbonate of soda did not contract the disease.

Baking soda  “A Proven Medicinal Agent”

Early publications of 19th C, by Arm and Hammer, introduced remedies.  But in 1922 they committed to the health benefits of their product with the launch of a new department.  Many physicians had been “long urging” them to educate the public on its use for simple, safe home remedies.  A 32 page booklet with explanation about alkalinizing and helpful tips on preventions and cures, was put into circulation.  It continued, with several versions, for 40 years to saturate the minds and habits of millions of North Americans. When the FDA came out with a new definition of “drug” the company was forced to give up its claims.  But the traditions have not died, and many people have rediscovered the power of baking soda and carry forward its story.
