'Coronaviruses are EXQUISITELY pH sensitive', 1990 - The Solution

Shouldn’t the results of this peer reviewed Journal of Virology article be front page headlines on every newspaper in the world? Coronaviruses are pH sensitive. At higher pH and body temperature (37 C), they change shape, lose their spike proteins and are inactivated!!! The photographic evidence is below. Raise your pH and kill the virus. It’s that simple folks! No fuss, no muss, no side effects!!!

Effect of pH and temperature on the coronavirus MHV-A59.
(a) virions (individual viruses) shown after 2 hours at low pH (6.0) and 4°C
(b) virions clumped together and inactivated shown after 2 hours at high pH (8.0) and 37°C.

Dramatic photographic evidence that the E2 (S) spike protein of coronaviruses is exquisitely sensitive to high pH. Release of E2N (S1) from virions at pH 8.0 and 37°C and aggregation of E2c (S2) are associated with a loss of virus infectivity and the aggregation of virions.

Exposure to this pH and temperature in the extracellular environment induces premature and irreversible conformational changes to the glycoprotein spikes and aggregation of virions which interferes with their binding to cells. (The full paper is 9 pages.)
